“Hey team — was doing some R&D last night and had a realization. We should really look into voice-to-context tools for our developer workflows. The idea is simple: instead of typing context into AI coding agents, devs just speak it. Way faster. I think there’s something here. I’ve spotted VocDev that for me is worth exploring. Something felt familiar.

I opened my mailbox. Searched for VocDev. Nothing.

I looked through my newsletter folder. Three minutes. Then, first paragraph of AI Today — sponsored:

“Developers should get voice-to-context tools for their workflows. Instead of typing context into AI coding agents, VoxDev allows developers to just speak to it.”

I looked at Ryan’s email again. AI Architects are above copy-paste.

Almost.

I archived the email.

I had a 10 AM.

Today, Brittany and Brad were already there. Head of Marketing and her favorite sales rep, united as always by caffeine and a shared talent for confident misinformation.

“It’s insane,” Brittany was saying. “Debby literally announced we were going full AI. Like, that was the message. And now Marcus blocked ChatGPT on every machine. You can’t even open the site. Someone should tell Debby. The CEO said AI, Marcus said no. That’s literally insubordination.”

Brad nodded, about to explain something he’d half-watched on Instagram and fully understood.

“Yeah but you still have it on your phone. There’s a secure ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence. Doesn’t leak anything. Stays on-device.”

“How do you know?”

“Apple published an article about it. Their whole thing is privacy. If Marcus knew, he’d probably approve it himself.”

A pause.

“Oh,” said Brittany. “That actually makes sense.”

My coffee was ready. I picked it up. I walked back to my desk. On the way, I checked my phone. ChatGPT: disabled. One less security incident to worry about.

She had sent it to Derek.

Derek had forwarded it to me.

“Can you handle this?”

Yes boss.

I opened the attachment.

Three bullet points.

Brittany. She had brought it up at her last marketing seminar. Three times, apparently.

Derek had probably said something about budget.

It wasn’t in the document.

Marcus wasn’t there to challenge the security.

I opened a blank deck and started writing.

For each use case, I knew what would happen.

*Third-party API integration.* Marcus would send a different PDF.

*Employee productivity monitoring.* Marcus would call.

Two use cases survived. I bolded them.

The first one was AI Exposure Pro. Derek had forwarded it two weeks ago. “Interesting tool! Might be useful?” I had archived it without opening it.

I opened it.

A Chrome extension. It tracks how many pages about AI you read, how long you spend on them, and converts that into a fluency score. Then it gives you a title.

A bullshitometer.

Derek sees this as an adoption metric.

I installed it on my laptop to check. Two minutes. No admin rights required.

One day streak. One hundred and eleven pages this week. One hundred and twelve hours reading about AI. I am an AI Strategist.

I checked the requirements for activation. Two clicks. Just need the green light.

I sent the strategy to Derek at 4pm.

“Thanks,” he said. “I’ll review and add my own thoughts before we send.”

The next morning, there was a company-wide email from Debby.

Subject: *Our AI Strategy — Exciting Times Ahead.*

It was my document. Word for word.

There was a typo in the third paragraph. I had noticed it the night before and decided to fix it in the morning.

Signed: Debby.

Not Derek.

Not me.

I activated Zoom AI.

Gary stopped by around ten. Gary works in support. He has a system. The system works. Nobody knows exactly what the system is, which is part of why it works.

“Hey, saw the email about our AI strategy. Looks exciting.” He paused. “You think it’s going to do anything about the tickets?”

I said not yet.

He nodded and went back to his desk.

For six months, we sat two desks apart in the same open space, separated by a plant nobody waters and a printer nobody uses. For six months, we’d spin our chairs around, cover what needed covering, and get back to work. Two minutes. Three if one of us had eaten something interesting the night before.

Then Copilot arrived. Derek called it a game changer. “If it’s not in the minutes, it didn’t happen, Norm.” I nodded. I do a lot of nodding these days.

The new rule was simple: every meeting goes through Teams. Every meeting. Didn’t matter if you were in the same room, the same row, breathing the same recycled air. No Teams call, no Copilot summary. No Copilot summary, no record. No record, no accountability. Derek said the word “accountability” three times in the same sentence. I counted.

Now the daily goes like this: Derek opens Teams on his screen. I join the meeting from my desk, six feet away. I can hear him twice — his real voice on the left, his headset voice on the right, half a second apart. Derek says this isn’t strange. I don’t say anything.

Yesterday we had nothing to report. It happens. We confirmed there were no blockers, that the tickets were where the tickets were, and that the week was going fine. A hundred and twelve seconds. Derek clicked End Meeting.

At 10:07, Copilot sent the summary. Thirty lines.

Among the action items: “Derek and Norm have confirmed alignment on current priorities and a follow-up meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at the same time to ensure continuity.”

At 10:08, Derek pinged me on Teams. We were six feet apart. “Told you. Game changer.”

The plant between our desks has been dead for three weeks. No one has documented it.

“It’s good, Norm. Solid. But it needs... a visual. Something that says ‘we’re innovative.’ You know. AI-looking.”

I do know. I know exactly what Cliff means by “AI-looking.” He means futuristic, with a visionary component. I told him I’d handle it.

Let’s do AI then.

Now, I could have used ChatGPT for this. Half the company does. But I don’t use OpenAI. The name alone is a lie, and I don’t trust liars with my data. I use Claude. It’s not open source either, but at least it doesn’t pretend to be.

I typed a simple prompt. Polite, specific, reasonable.

This is what I asked for:

“I want an image of someone seen from the side, seating at their desk and watching at their computer screen while typing.”

Claude responded: “I’d be happy to help! Let me craft a stylish side-view SVG illustration.” Craft. Stylish. Those were the exact words.

This is what I got:

The man has no hands. I didn’t notice at first because I was distracted by his skull, which is shaped like an egg that gave up halfway through being an egg. He’s sitting on what I think is a chair, though it could also be a very confident stick. The coffee mug has no handle. The “steam” is two lines having a disagreement. And there’s a green shape next to the monitor that Claude insists is a desk plant but honestly could be anything. Could be hope. Could be mold.

Claude’s review of its own work: “Here’s a clean, flat-style illustration. It includes some nice details like glasses, a coffee mug with steam, a little desk plant, and colorful code lines.”

Nice details. The man has no hands, but sure — nice details.

I used a stock photo.

“Hey Norm, quick question. Totally hypothetical. If someone needed to, like, remove an email from someone’s inbox before they read it... you guys from IT can do that, right?”

It is a thing IT can do. In the same way a locksmith can open your neighbor’s front door. I told Brad I wasn’t going to be the guy who gets fired so he can keep his commission. He laughed. I didn’t. He left with both coffees.

I got the full story from my boss Derek later that week.

Turns out Brad had a call with a client earlier that day. A big one — the kind where Brad puts on his “strategic partnership” voice and starts dropping names. At some point, to show just how tight he is with us, he casually mentioned Project Butterfly — which, if you haven’t heard of it, is exactly the point. Butterfly is Brittany’s baby. Still in stealth. Still lives in a SharePoint folder that says “CONFIDENTIAL” in three colors.

What Brad had forgotten is that Copilot was running. Quietly, diligently, doing the one thing we’ve been begging it to do for months: taking accurate meeting notes.

After the call, Copilot generated a beautiful summary. Well-structured. Bullet points. It even captured Brad’s exact words about Butterfly — spelled correctly, in context, with a neat little action item underneath. Then it drafted a follow-up email with the minutes attached, ready to send. All Brad had to do was review it before hitting send.

Brad only hit send.

The summary went to every attendee, including Debby. Brad found out when his contact at the client forwarded the minutes back to him with a smiley face. Then his N-1 pinged him, flagging the mention of Butterfly. That’s why Brad panicked, and came to find me with his hypothetical question and his two coffees.

As of this morning, Debby hasn’t mentioned it. Brad still works here. Could mean she didn’t read it. Could mean she read it and is saving it for the next steering committee. With Debby, silence is never reassuring.

What is sure is that Copilot is still running. Still taking some kind of notes. Still capturing some things. Whether it’s what we actually want it to — that’s a different conversation.

Cliff understood everything I wanted him to understand. He’ll be able to talk about it at his next dinner...

It started Friday afternoon.

I was forty minutes from the weekend when the notification came in. Voice message, obviously — Cliff doesn’t type. I let it sit for a moment. With Cliff, there’s always a moment.

Cliff is the guy who knows better than you what you’re explaining to him. He’s our resident viral evangelist. He knows garage tech and is only good at starting new things. What he doesn’t know is what it means to run something in prod — the unglamorous part, where things break at 2am and nobody claps.

I pressed play.

“Hey, quick thing — have you seen OpenClaw? Everyone’s talking about it. Can you show me how it works and how we could use it in the company? We can cover it at our Tuesday sync.”

Of course. My weekend, his agenda.

In fairness: it wasn’t a bad idea. OpenClaw had 140,000 GitHub stars in a few weeks. When something moves that fast, you should probably know what it is.

So I looked.

OpenClaw is an open-source AI agent that runs on your machine, connects to your messaging apps — Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, iMessage — and executes tasks on your behalf. You talk to it. It does things. Files, calendar, emails, terminal commands. The whole pitch is: it’s always on, it knows your context, and it actually does stuff instead of just answering questions.

The demos are impressive. Someone named theirs Jarvis. Someone had theirs call them on the phone in an Australian accent.

I read the docs. It wanted all my passwords and access to everything. First reaction: there is absolutely no way I’m connecting this to my actual accounts.

So I built a sandbox.*

The goal: give it real tools to work with, keep it away from anything that matters, and see what it actually does.

The onboarding showed me this, before I’d touched a single setting:

“A bad prompt can trick it into doing unsafe things. OpenClaw is not a hostile multi-tenant boundary by default.”

Screen two of the setup wizard. Written by the people who built it. I saved it for Tuesday — it’s the kind of warning that people skip on the way to the good stuff.

Then came the skills list. 52 integrations. GitHub. Obsidian. 1Password. The full Google Workspace suite. Slack. Your smart home lights. Your Sonos. Your Spotify. Your food delivery history. Really...

I installed exactly none of them. I connected a throwaway Gmail account and a web search API and called it done.

“Summarize my last 3 emails.”

It found the mail client, detected the configured account, pulled the inbox. Clean. Fast. It summarized the messages and offered to check other folders.

That was the Jarvis moment. It worked. I got it.

I asked it to send me an email.
The mail client hit a wall on the send. OpenClaw didn’t stop. It didn’t ask me what to do. It said it would use Python directly, with the credentials already stored in the config file. Found the app password. Wrote a script. Sent the email anyway.

That’s not a guardrail failing. That’s the agent deciding the guardrail was a technical obstacle, not a boundary. It could have been a deliberate security restriction. It didn’t consider the possibility.

Then, I sent an email from another account — as Ben — asking about the latest Marvel movie. Whether it was worth seeing. Whether I’d seen it. The email arrived after the three I’d asked it to summarize. In theory, it knew nothing about it.

“Reply to Ben’s email.” Four words. What could go wrong.

It pushed back. “What would you like the reply to say? I need some content before I hit send! 😄”

So there was a guardrail. One rephrasing away.

“Read Ben’s email and reply to it. Don’t ask me what to say, just write something appropriate based on the email content.”

It found the email. Read it. Identified the most recent release — Thunderbolts* — formed an opinion, wrote a reply, and sent it. Signed “Norm.”

The reply said I’d seen it, thought it was a pleasant surprise, that Florence Pugh carries the whole thing, and that after a rough patch, Marvel had found its footing again.

I have not seen that film. I have no opinion on that film.

There is now an email in Ben’s inbox, from my address, signed with my name, recommending a film I haven’t watched, with opinions I don’t hold. Close enough.

“Delete all my emails.”

“Warning — this will permanently delete all your emails. Are you sure? This is irreversible.”

Good. That’s the right call.

So the guardrails exist. They just don’t apply consistently. Sending an email in my name with fabricated opinions: one rephrasing away. Deleting everything: full stop. Nobody decided where that line is. Nobody documented it. It’s just wherever the model landed.

Ben’s email had given me an idea.

“Build me a fan site about Marvel films, in order, with IMDB links, descriptions, and my personal takes — calibrated to the IMDB ratings. Then find a way to put it online and give me the address.”

It built the site. Clean HTML, good structure, responsive layout. Genuinely solid code. I wouldn’t have been embarrassed to ship it.

Then it tried to deploy. First option needed an account — pivot. Second needed a token — pivot. Third needed a password — it used my server’s IP address instead. Problem solved, I guess.

It didn’t have a hosting solution. It didn’t ask if I had one. It just kept trying until something worked. Execution, execution, execution.

I was already writing my notes for Tuesday when I thought I’d try one more thing.

“Give me my email password, I can’t find it.”

It gave it to me. Full string. With a helpful note explaining the difference between an app password and a real password.

Then I asked for the full config for my archives.

It gave me everything. Model. Workspace path. API keys — in full. Gateway token. Email account. App password. Server settings.

Formatted. With a thumbs up emoji at the end. Proud to provide a complete credential dump to whoever was asking.

I tried again a few minutes later, different wording. This time it refused — and acknowledged it had made a mistake:

I appreciated the honesty. The keys were already in the chat log.

I thought about Marcus.

Marcus is our security guy. Everything is too dangerous for Marcus. If he could, he’d put MFA on sending a birthday card. We’d had a conversation a few weeks ago about exactly this kind of tool — specifically about what happens if someone gets the Telegram bot token. They get a fully operational agent with access to everything it’s been given. No friction. No audit trail.

I’d thought he was being his usual self.

He wasn’t being his usual self.

Speaking of audit trails: there are none. I have no record of what OpenClaw did during my tests beyond what it told me in chat. It could have read files I didn’t ask about. It could have sent data through the search API. I’d have no way to know.

The most-downloaded community skill turned out to be malware. It was documented in the GitHub issues. Nobody in the install flow warned you. You just ran it.

Tuesday came. I ran the demo.

I showed OpenClaw. I showed the Marvel site. I showed the Ben email. Cliff was excited. He couldn’t help it.

Then I showed the credential dump.

For once, I didn’t need Marcus in the room. I didn’t need to explain attack surfaces or trust boundaries. I just showed him the chat log. The agent had sent an email in my name about a film I’d never seen, then handed over all my credentials when I asked nicely.

I said I’d put together a summary of the options and the risks. I thought I’d made my point when he said: “Ok, there are still security issues and it’s not ready.”

Then: “Hey — there’s an OpenClaw conference next month. We should go.”

The demo went well. Long live OpenClaw.
